'ICT'
RECONNECTS WITH SOCIETY (2003-2006)
As part of their rehabilitation programme, ‘Oum el Nour’
included the Saradar IT training programme to its already running
activities. The association meant not only to offer to its
residents the opportunity to learn new skills but also to provide
them with tools and means that could contribute to their
socio-economic re-integration since IT literacy has become an
important qualification/requirement on the job market. The
certificates delivered upon the completion of the 12-hour
initiation course presents an asset and can facilitate employment
opportunities.
1. "OUM EL NOUR"
ASSOCIATION (2003-2006)
- Participants profile:
The beneficiaries belonged to 3 different ‘Oum el Nour’ centres,
located in neighbouring villages. Their age varied from 17 to 45
years old. Most of them were men, ranging between 17 and 30 years
old, university students from different backgrounds and social
classes.
| "I am a university student. Drugs led to the interruption of my 3rd college year. I had 2 laptops at home but could not use them since I lost all my computer skills because of my addiction. Thanks to this training opportunity, I will be able to use them again, once I complete my rehabilitation program here"

"I used to be an overhead projector operator but wasn’t able to use a PC ! These sessions gave me the opportunity to become computer literate"

The training programme met so much enthusiasm by ‘Oum el Nour’
participants that they approached the association to demand that
the association existing software be upgraded and be replaced by
the latest released Microsoft XP Windows and Word used by the
Saradar IT Programme®.
- Comments by ‘Oum el Nour’ supervisors and residents:
“This training session was very appropriate considering that the association has just acquired new PCs. Your programme has introduced technology in the life of our residents. As of now, they will be responsible of the equipment in this centre. Computers have become part of our rehabilitation programme. In any case, electronic skills are unavoidable tools these days. They will be very useful to our residents once they will reintegrate society. It is an experience to replicate. ”
Mona Yazigi, Oum el Nour Executive Director
“I really liked the programme, since I had no idea about computers. The concept of a mobile IT school is excellent! The instructors were so patient and persistent! I used to be hired on a punctual basis for conferences to operate the over head projector without understanding anything about technology: I never learned any electronic skills before this training programme.”
Nassib, resident
“I used to work as a cable and Internet technician without any computer or Internet knowledge. I have never had the chance before to learn about computers and the Internet.”
Boulos, resident
“The residents were very happy with this programme. Until this training session, they used to play computer games only. Now, they demanded that the administration installs the new Microsoft software in order to be able to practice. This is the first time that an activity is held at ‘Oum el
Nour’ and followed by residents with such an enthusiasm.” Sami

In 2004, the
Saradar IT Programme® fulfilled
its promise and headed towards Achkout for the second year in a
row and provided young people in rehabilitation at 'Oum el Nour'
training courses for a period of 2 weeks.
Within the scope of the Saradar IT Programme (SITP)®
objectives to ensure the “right to access information and
technology”, particularly to marginalised social groups in
Lebanon, the Saradar Mobile Computer School addressed 46 young
drug addicts in rehabilitation at “Oum el Nour” association
during the month of March. The trainees’ regular attendance and
serious commitment to the scheduled 81-hour course confirmed the
growing importance of IT as a major tool and alternative for
people with special needs. Building capacities and developing IT
knowledge contribute to bridge the divide between marginalised
individuals and society by providing them with another chance to
reconnect with their own environment and explore new
possibilities.

2. JEUNESSE
CONTRE LA DROGUE - J.C.D (2005-2009)
Pursuing its objective to expand IT knowledge and competence
among marginalized communities and disadvantaged regions, the
SITP seeks to promote technology as an invaluable tool for
change, progress and improvement, leading to social integration
and recognition. In this perspective, the Caravan dedicated its
winter and spring calendars to groups under rehabilitation, i.e.
drug addicts and juvenile delinquents. In March 2005, the Saradar
Mobile Computer School addressed 16 young drug addicts under
rehabilitation at “Jeunesse Contre la Drogue” (Youth
Against Drugs). In May 2009, the SITP targeted 13 drug addicts and 7 of JCD staff. The trainees’ regular attendance and serious
commitment to the scheduled 18-hour course confirmed the growing
importance of IT as a major tool and an alternative for people
with special needs. Building capacities and developing IT
knowledge contribute to bridging the divide between marginalized
individuals and society, by providing them with yet another
chance to reconnect with their own environment whilst exploring
new possibilities.
